Sherman served in with Troop G of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, popularly known as The Rough Riders. He mustered into service on 27 June 1898 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It seems unlikely he made it to Cuba to participate in any of the campaigns. On 15 Sep 1898, Camp Wikoff, Montauk Point, Long Island, New York; he mustered out of service with his unit. His residence was recorded as Muscatine, Iowa (Muster Papers).
