Joseph Humphrey BENNETT was born on 22 Feb 1861 in Missouri. He died on 23 Feb 1897 in Breckenridge, Caldwell, Missouri. He was buried in Trosper Cemetery, Daviess, Missouri. "About noon Monday, the 22nd instant, Joseph H. Bennett and Harvey Bush met in this city and disagreed in the settlement of pasture rent, the amount in dispute being $1.10. Bush refused to pay the whole amount asked, and Mr. Bennett insisted that he should. They then separated, and Bennett walked into Russel & Trosper's grocery department. Bush then went to Connor's livery stable where he procured a heavy club about three feet in length, and armed with this bludgeon followed Bennett into the store. The quarrel was renewed and Bush called Bennett an unmentionable name, which Mr. Bennett resented by striking at him with his fist, whereupon Bush struck him on the head with three blows from the club, after which he left the store. Mr. Bennett was in a stupor until about 10 p.m. Tuesday when he died. A warrant was issued for Bush." -- The Breckenridge Bulletin, Feb. 26, 1897.
