Lawrence Hansford Welch was brought to Union County, Arkansas between 1840 and 1843 by his parents. They probably lived in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana until they moved to Panola County, Texas. But they returned to Union County, Arkansas betwee and 1860 and 1862. Lawrence Hansford married Mary Greer. A few years after Mary died, Lawrence Hansford was visiting his sister-in-law, Jane Greer Snoddy in Carthage, Texas where he died. It is believed that he is buried in a cemetery near Carthage, Texas where members of the Greer families are buried. He does have a Civil War Monument erected in Weldon Cemetery in Claiborne Parish, La, but no dates are on the tombstone. The monument next to his wife, Mary Greer Welch.

Lawrence Hansford Welch enlisted March 03, 1862 in Union County, Arkanas in Company I. Dockery's Regiment 19th Arkansas Infantry. On capitulation of the City of Vicksburg, Mississippi on 04 Jul 1863, he was taken prisoner. On 07 Jul 1863, he signed a parole and was released from custody.
