Three children would be born to this union: Lillian Elizabeth, Vivian Jane and McClellan Cline "Bud" Messer.
After the tragic death of McClellan in 1935, Sallie would move back into the home of her mother, Delphia in the Jenkins Branch Community of Swain County.
She would later marry Sam Gordon Birchfield on 01 May 1939 in Rabun County, Georgia. Although this marriage ended in divorce, they would later remarry on 12 Feb 1951 in Swain County, NC.
Six children would be born to this union: Virginia Catherine, Barbara Ann, Norma Polly, Sam Gordon Jr, Harry Lyndon and Carolyn Emmeline Birchfield.
Sally would die at C.J. Harris Hospital in Sylva.
