J.C. "Jake" Callahan, age 74, of Wytheville, died Thursday, April 15, 1999 in the Edgemont Health Care Center. Mr. Callahan was preceded in death by his parents, Fielden & Mattie Cassell Callahan; five brothers and four sisters. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Aeroquip and was a farmer. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 AF&AM, and Wytheville Lodge No. 87 Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was an avid baseball fan of George Wythe High School and the New York Yankees. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Halsey Callahan; one daughter, Mattie C. Ward, Pearisburg; one son, the Rev. Jeffery C. "Jeff" Callahan of Chilhowie; one sister, Birtie C. Fisher of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Justin E. Ward and Carson D. Ward, both of Pearisburg, and Stacia F. Callahan of Max Meadows; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Ruth P. Callahan and Louise Callahan, both of Wytheville. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m. in Fairview United Methodist Church with Dr. Fred Austin and the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview United Methodist Church.
