Son of Thomas and Rosina (Whipple) Northrop. He was the fifth of nine children. He spent his early years in Fairfield, Vermont before the family moved to Erie Co., New York. Married Hanna Marie Bond in 1845 in Erie Co. They moved to Maquoketa, Jackson Co, Iowa about 1852 where Calvin ran a successful furniture business for many years. Calvin and Hanna had five children: Sanford, Frank, Alfred, Clara and Charles. After retiring, Calvin and Hanna moved to Santa Barbara, CA to live. Calvin died there in 1901 and is buried at Santa Barbara Cemetery. Hanna moved back to Iowa and lived with her daughter, Clara (Northrop) Mitchell until her death in 1919.
