Roger was a hard working farmer. He and Elizabeth Hudson Phillips raised 9 children through the great depression. He never owned or drove a car. He either drove a team of horses or walked everywhere he went. He was a devout Baptist and would not work on Sunday. His recreation was pitching horseshoes, a sport that he loved. He won several gold cups at Callaway and Audrain Co. Fairs.
Born in Holts Summitt, Roger farmed in the New Bloomfield and Guthrie areas most of his life. After the farms began to fail during the depression he moved to Fulton where he worked at the brick refractory and Danuser Machine Co. before he retired.
After retirement he sold his home and moved to Lamar Colorado, where he lived for several years. One of his sons, William Phillip Rice also lived there. After Bill passed away in 1966, Roger returned to Fulton. He rented a room on E 5th Street where he lived until his death in 1973.
