Viola grew up in the town of Minotola, Atlantic County, NJ, the youngest of seven children.
She was a member of the first junior class to attend Glassboro Normal School (now Rowan University) when it was a 2-year teachers college, graduating in 1925. Viola then taught at a public elementary school in Minotola, until her marriage.
Viola met her future husband, W. Earl Graham, Sr. when he became a boarder in the family home. (Her mother, a widow, was the post-mistress of Minotola at the time.) Being ummarried at the age of 30, Viola was considered a "spinster." (She told me this :)
Viola married W. Earl Graham on Thanksgiving 1934 (November 29th) in her family home. They went on to have two children.
Viola and Earl moved numerous times throughout his early career, but eventually settled down in Havertown, Delaware County, PA during their children's school years. Later, they lived for at least 10 years in Westfield, NJ. They then spent their retirement years in Chester County, PA.
In addition to being a kind and loving mother and grandmother, Viola was a talented seamstress. She made many of her own dresses and suits. She was also skilled at embroidery and crocheting.
She also loved to sing and I believe at some point sang in the choir at a Vineland church.
Viola began suffering from Alzheimer's Disease at about 90 years of age. Even as the disease worsened, her husband was able to care for her in their home until she passed away peacefully there, at age 93.
