Robert was born to Hezekiah and Mary Brown Ellis. He was an older brother of Elizabeth P. "Bettie" Ellis Smoot and John Henry Ellis also buried at St. Mary's. Robert was in the Civil War, Company A, 53rd Infantry Regiment Virginia and was listed as a POW at Libby Prison on April 10, 1865.
Robert married three times, first to Elizabeth Blackburn, after her death he married Ellen Alley, daughter of Robert and Sarah Alley on Nov 1, 1865 in Henrico County. Robert and Ellen's children were: Annie Lee, Robert James, Dora Elizabeth, Mary Frances, Luther Thomas, Missouri Jane and John Henry Ellis. Robert's third wife was Susan Elizabeth Alley. Robert's occupation was a coal miner and an Engineer. Robert passed away July 6 and was buried July 8, 1907.
