Obituary:

Van C. McCommons, 79, of 413 Lawrence St. died Monday, June 30, 1997, at the Calloway Community Hospital in Fulton, Mo.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3 at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home with Mr. McCommons's sons conducting the services. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the St John's Lutheran Cemetery in Dongola. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. McCommons was born on October 17, 1917 in Union County, the son of Ira O. and Alice B.Holshouser McCommons. He married Lodema Eddleman McCommons on Jan 20, 1936, in Murphysboro. She survives.

He was a retired lineman for Southeastern Electrical Co-op. he was a member of the North Benton Baptist Church. He was an active member of the Franklin County Civil Defense Unit in Benton for several years.

In addition to his wife, Lodema, he is survived by three daughters, Judy Dixon and husband Bill of Benton, Vanita Neve and husband Louie of Macomb. Mary Helen Holman and husband Stanley of Ewing, three sons, George Lee McCommons and wife Marcella of Dongola, Wesley McCommons and wife Lois of Olathe, Kan., Steve McCommons and wife Salinda of Benton; 18 grandchildren, Carroll, Brenda, Diane, Valorie, Clark, Louie, Mark Karl, Nicole, David, Sally, Mike, Christia, Kendra, Deidra, Erin, Jeremy, Casey; 18 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother Ira McCommons Jr. and wife Betty of Dongola; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-grandson and three sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children Home in Carmi or to the Heart Fund, and will be accepted at the funeral home at any time.
