Dec. 9th. 1944 Sgt. Walter E. Deneen Jr. has been awarded the Bronze Star for "Heroic achievement in action" The citation reads:
"On 29th September 1944, Company "H" was in a defensive position on Mt. Battaglia, Italy. Due to the inclement weather and continuous fighting in repelling determined enemy counterattacks, the men were very tired. Sergeant Deneen, a machine gunner, was placed in a position to cover the face of a steep hill and to guard against the enemy infilterating our lines. As the fog lifted in front of his position, Sergeant Deneen noticed two enemy soldiers hiding behind a rock 30 yards below him. He was unable to depress his gun sufficiently to bring fire upon the enemy. Then exhibiting presence of mind, he picked up a large rock and threw it at them. The two enemy soldiers, thinking that a hand grenade had been thrown, vacated their hiding place, and started to run down the hill. Before they had covered much ground, Sergeant Deneen had his machine gun in operation, and with one burst killed both enemy soldiers. As a result of his action, Sergeant Deneen prevented these enemy soldiers from returning to their lines with information of our defensive positions. His actions reflect great credit on himself and are in accordance with the highest traditions of the armed forces"
