Served as a privateer in the Revolutionary War. He was master of the privateer sloop "Diamond" in 1776. Before becoming Captain of the Diamond, he was prize master of this ship.

Among the British ships he captured was the Jane, the Mary and Joseph and Live Oak.

He married Sarah Jarsey October 22, 1768 in Newport RI.

He was father of five children: Thomas, Martha Jarsey, Sarah Jarsey, Ann and Nancy.
