Funeral services for Howard Powers, 75, longtime Roosevelt County resident, will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Ron Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the Floyd Cemetery with Tanner Parks, Tabor Parks, Randy Powers, Dale Powers, Ronnie Powers and Todd Miller serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Emmitt Clayton, Marlin Sasser, Donnie Hardin, David Stone, Walter Lackey, Todd Newberry, Scott Brown, Jesse Baldock, Wayne Hardin, Buddy Skipworth and Nicky Howard.
Howard Gene Powers was born November 17, 1933, in Arch, NM, to Floyd and Trixie Powers and died March 19, 2009, in Muleshoe, TX, where he had made his home for the past 7 years. He attended school in Portales and graduated from Portales High in 1952. He continued his education at Eastern New Mexico University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1956. On March 15, 1958 in Portales, he was married to Marjorie Miller. Howard coached basketball and baseball in Dora for a year. He began farming in 1960, and farmed in Arch until 1994.� In 1994, he bought a farm seven miles east of Portales and farmed there until 2002, when he retired and moved to Muleshoe. While farming, Howard raised race horses and Greyhounds for coyote hunting. He attended Trinity Christian Fellowship in Muleshoe.
He is survived by Marjorie Powers, his wife of 50 years, of Muleshoe; his son, Bryce Powers of Amarillo, TX; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jo Lynn Powers of Muleshoe, TX and Marla Layne and Scott Schumacher of Phoenix, AZ; seven grandchildren, Tanner Lee Parks, Tabor Lane Parks, Makenzie Lynn Diaz, Gareth Powers, Caleb Powers. Cambrie Madison Schumacher and Logan Scott Schumacher; two great-grandchildren, Baylor Reece Diaz and Devin Cole Diaz; two brothers, Gerald Wayne (Pearl) Powers of Amarillo, TX, and Louis Edward (Diane) Powers of Dallas, TX; four nieces, Tonya Johannsen, Shawna Johannsen, Marka Herbert and Tia Paxton; and four nephews, Todd Miller, Ronnie Powers, Dale Powers and Randy Powers; his mother-in-law, Betty Miller of Portales and his brother and sister-in-law, T. and Peggy Miller of San Angelo, TX.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
