Mrs. Ruby Elaine Harris Smith was born October 8, 1932, in Beckville, Texas. She was one of four children born to the marriage of Willie Gay and Eva Mae Davidson Harris. Mrs. Smith graduated from Beckville High School with the class of 1949 and later attended Panola College. She married John Woods Smith on October 18, 1949. Mrs. Smith was a lifetime member of Beckville United Methodist Church where she served in numerous capacities including the organization of many youth activities and fund raising efforts. For many years she held an annual luncheon at her home to honor the senior women of the church. Mrs. Smith was a Camp Fire and Bluebird Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and supporter, a member and officer of the Beckville PTA, former member of the Beckville ISD Board of Trustees, and a charter member of the Mrs. Jane Library Board of Directors. She also actively worked to preserve the history of the city of Beckville, its schools and its people, while organizing several fund raising efforts for community projects. Ruby was a long time supporter of the Beckville Volunteer Fire Department as well as remaining very politically active in her community. Mrs. Smith was well known in the community as being the first to respond in any crisis situation offering support, food or funds to those in distress. Her generosity knew no bounds. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Harris; son, John Michael Smith; nephew, Crawford Duane Parker.
Survivors include her loving husband, John Woods Smith of Beckville; children, Pam Sharp and husband Johnny of Beckville, Ann Spradley and husband Sherman of Deadwood, Mary Smith and Trisha Overgoner of Nacogdoches; brother, Gay Harris and wife Betty Lou of Beckville; sister,: Beth Parker and husband Crawford of Carthage; grandchildren, Susan Ramo, Ron Sharp, MeriAnne Sharp, Sherman Spradley, Jennifer Spradley, Brandon Kelley, Taylor Smith and Dana Spradley; great-grandchildren, Blake, Kaden, Abbie, Mary Kate, Jackson, Ashlynn, Jayden, Tavin, Tobi and Ali; numerous other relatives and a host of friends
