It is presumed the young family settled in the small rural community near Ohiopyle, Fayette County, Pennsylvania where four more siblings were born...William, Emma, Elizabeth, and Irene. The death certificate of his sister Emma, born in 1885, states she was born in Farmington, Fayette County, Pennsylvania and his sister Irene, born in 1889, was born in Ohiopyle, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
His parents, Augustus and Emma, died at a young age leaving behind 6 orphaned children. Circumstances surrounding their deaths is unclear. It has been said by some family members that the Shaffer family was living in or near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, during the Great Flood of 1889 and died as a result of disease from it.
The children were "adopted" out (although not always officially) to other families to be raised. According to his obituary published in the The Daily Courier (Connellsville, Pa), Amos was 5 years old when he immigrated to America from Germany. He lived in Ohiopyle for at least 5 years after coming to Fayette County. His obituary states that about the age of 10-11, he was living in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, possibly with his younger brother August. It is believed this was after the death of his parents. It is not known who raised Amos and August as young boys. Amos made Connellsville his home for the remainder of his life.
On 13 October 1906 he married Julia Marth and together they had one son, Harry Andrew. He was a printer by trade and was employed by the Fayette Monitor, Daily News, and eventually retired from the The Daily Courier.
