A member of the famed Iron Brigade, Co. D, 19th Indiana Infantry. Richard came to Indianapolis to work as a machinist in a factory. He was listed as age 21 when he mustered in on July 29, 1861 as a 3rd Sgt. He was wounded at the Battle of Brawner's Farm, Gainesville, VA on August 28, 1862. He was discharged from the 19th Indiana in January 1963 to become the 1st Lt. in the 58th Indiana Infantry. The Iron Brigade earned its nickname as "men who stood like iron" and it had the highest casualty rate of any Union brigade in the Civil War.
