Listed during the Mexican-American War as serving in Capt. Randolph Ridgely's unit, Company C, 4th US Artillery. Also served in the Civil War. Was in the Confederate Army, Company E, 2nd Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Legend has it that during the Mexican-American War he was raising his canteen to take what he thought was his last drink of water and a bullet ripped through both canteen straps. It made him so mad he was one of the first ones over the castle wall at Chapultepec.
