Von joined the C.C.C.'s and worked on projects in Tennessee before joining the US Army in 1942. He married Margret Jane Whaley on March 25, 1943, at Palacios, Texas before leaving home to fight in France and Germany during WWII. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, Von and Jane moved to the Wenatchee Valley and lived in Peshastin area for the remainder of his life. Von worked in the local orchards, for Peshastin Lumber and Box, Hank & Jack Brown Logging, and until his retirement, for Ralph Newell Logging. He loved the outdoors and spent many winter days fishing on the Wenatchee River. Von was a long time member of the Dryden Baptist Church and later, Evergreen Baptist Church in Cashmere.
He is survived by his wife, Margret of Cashmere; his sons, Wendell (Debbie) Whaley of Peshastin, Tom (Dena) Whaley of Dryden; daughter, Shirley Whaley of Wenatchee; 3 brothers, Freeman Stoner of Peshastin, Ernest Stoner of Pigeon Forge, TN, Millard Whaley of Peshastin; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Teddy Whaley; and 4 brothers and sisters.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the employees of the Cashmere Convalescent Center for the help and care given to Von during his final months. Funeral Services were held on January 25, 2005, at Wards Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth.
