Bazil Wayne "Jack" Rumsey, a longtime Ririe resident and native of eastern Idaho who worked on the Ririe, Teton and Palisades dams, died at his home Sunday, June 9, 1996. He was 80.
Mr. Rumsey was an ardent conservationist who took a personnal interest in the public lands of eastern Idaho. He cleaned up public camping areas as a volunteer and monitored wildlife movements in the Willow and Tex Creek areas. He raised horses and enjoyed hunting, fishing, rock-collecting and the outdoors.
He was born March 13, 1916 at Rigby, the son of George Adams and Edith Chiles Rumsey. He grew up on the Egin Bench and attended schools in Rexburg.
He married Letha Ruby Moss on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1936 at Ririe and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City, Latter-Day Saints temple. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
The couple ranched in the Kilgore area and later moved to a small farm west of Ririe. He worked in Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, Grand Teton and Grand Canyon national parks as a construction foreman. Mr. Rumsey helped build the Going-To-The-Sun Highway in Glacier National Park.
He also worked as a carpenter at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. He was a member of the Laborers International Union local No. 155. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held the office of High Priest in the Ririe Third Ward LDS Church.
Survivors include his wife, Letha Rumsey of Ririe, a daughter, Mrs Alan (Patricia) Smith of Garfield, two sons, Russell M. Rumsey of Pocatello and Ryan B. Rumsey of Idaho Falls, a sister, Wanda Edinger of Coos Bay, Ore.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Blaine, and a son George (Sonny Boy).
Funeral services will be Thursday June 13 at 1 p.m. at the Ririe LDS Stake Center, with Bishop K. Reid Larsen officiating. The family will visit with friends on Thursday at the Stake Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel of Rigby.
