John Howard Cook Sr. was born on April 3, 1891, in South Weber, Weber Co., Utah, the second of eight children born to Andrew Beverage Cook and Mary Amanda Pingree.
He was born upstairs in a small frame home (a lean-to was built later to the west side). The home was situated on an L shaped piece of land with a creek running to the rear. A corral was built to the top of the L, so that the animals could obtain water from the creek. The family had planted a small orchard as well as a garden and raised some alfalfa, even though there was little room for the planting of crops.
