Feb 3, 1923 - "Uncle Dave" Smith dead

"Uncle Dave" Smith one of the community's most highly respected and beloved characters has answered the silent call of death and passed to his reward, succumbing to a brief illness at six o'clock last Monday morning a the home of his daughter Mrs E. C. Wood of this place. Deceased was 75 years of age.

Uncle Dave had been ill for a week or less before his death and was not thought to be in any immediate danger until at a late hour Sunday night when it became evident that the end was near.

David Hume Smith was born in Polk County, Missouri, where he spent the early days of his youth. In the spring of 1865 he came to Arkansas with his parents, they settling a few miles northeast of here and was numbered among the pioneers of this section. In 1871 Mr Smith was married to Miss Mariah Jane Benbrook, to which union was born ten children, six of who have preceded their father in death. Those surviving are Dr. H. H. Smith and Mrs Mary Wood of Calico Rock, B. B. Smith of Okmulgee, Okla., and A. A. Smith of Kansas City. Deceased has been a resident of this vicinity for fifty-five years and was successfully engaged in farming until about fifteen years ago at about which time his wife died, he later retiring from his duties at farming.

In the death of this beloved Christian personage, the community loses one of it's most unique and noble characters, for he was known to most every man, woman and child in this and surrounding communities for his strong and pleasing personality, original and shrewd mannerisms, underlaid with naught but the purest of thought and motives toward all. Truly he must have been a friend of the most devout type of everybody, for he was not of the disposition to offend or criticize, but on the other hand possessed those admirable traits that served as a cement to true and lasting friendship. He was an optimist in all things, constantly on the alert for the brighter and better things in life, ever ready to encourage and help all alike with his friendly words of counsel and advice. He united with the M. E. Church, South at Spring Creek thirty-six years ago, living a constant and faithful member of the church until called by death. Those who know him best knew of his strong convictions in championing th cause of justice and right. Uncle Dave's keen sense for humor and merriment of wholesome nature, together with his numerous admirable traits, will perpetuate him in the minds of all who enjoyed his acquaintance and association in the daily walks of life.

Funeral services were held at Spring Creek Church Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock in the presence of a great company of friends who loved him, interment taking place in Spring Creek Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. C. Conkin pastor of the Methodist Church here, Rev J. E. Snell of Batesville and Elder D. A. Hively pastor of the Baptist Church here.
