He drowned while swimming in the San Carlos river, about four miles from Rice. The incident was witnessed by some campers, who thought he could not swim, and was not aware of how deep the river was. Dr. S.A. Perkins of the San Carlos Indian School and some of his helpers succeeded in raising the body, which was taken to the school before being transported to Globe. A coroner's jury came to the verdict that death was by accidental drowning.

He was a stone cutter, and had lived in Globe for several years. He was 51, and was survived by his wife and eight children.
