Sometime prior to 1827, John Merritt, the second oldest son of James and Mary, moved west, first to Orleans county, New York, and then to Niagara county, New York. In Niagara county he met and married Catherine Culp. The marriage took place on September 30, 1827, when John was but twenty one and his bride six years older. (5) John and Catherine settled on a farm near Lockport in Hartland township, Niagara county. Their first child, whom they named Horatio Nelson, was born there on July 18, 1828. A daughter, Agnes, followed on May 17, 1831. Then came three sons: Joseph, born March 8, 1832; Jerome John, born December 4, 1833; and William, born August 15, 1836.
