DEATH REMOVES CENTENARIAN

HENRY J. MULDER, SR. FUNERAL RITES HELD

Henry J. Mulder, Sr., Midland Park centennarian, passed away Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at his late home, 248 Paterson Avenue. The aged man celebrated his 100th birthday on October 12 of last year, at which time a celebration befitting the occasion was held.

Mr. Mulder had always enjoyed excellent health and up until just a week or two prior to his death was able to help himself. Born in the province of Geldersland [sic], Holland, on October 12, 1842, he came to America with his parents, the late Garret and Delia Gray [sic] Mulder at the age of 23. He had been a resident of Midland Park since that time.

He was the father of nine children, six of whom are living, as follows: Garry Mulder of Godwin Avenue, Midland Park; Mrs. Lambert Vander Snow, 248 Paterson Avenue, with whom he resided at the time of his death; Mrs. A. T. Smith, Cottage Street, Midland Park; Henry John Mulder Jr., 238 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park; Albert Mulder of Campgaw and John Mulder of Wyckoff.

He also had eighteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Five of his grandsons are now serving the armed forces of the United States: Private Richard Vander Snow at North Fort Lewis, Washington; Corp. Bernard Vander Snow, who is stationed somewhere in Iceland; Corp. Albert Mulder, somewhere in Panama; Private Harold W. Hazen, at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Corp. Edward A. Hazen, somewhere in the South Pacific.

For several years after coming to the United States, Mr. Mulder was employed on the main line of the Erie Railroad, after which he acted as manager for 42 years of a farm owned by the late Dr. John T. DeMund, located in Midland Park. For the next 25 years, he operated his own dairy and truck farm on Paterson Avenue. During this period he also worked with the Borough Road Department.

OLDEST MEMBER OF CHURCH

He was the oldest remaining member of the First Holland Reformed Church of Center Street, Midland Park, and helped lay the foundation for the first church building of this congregation. He also worked on the laying of the first tracks of the Bergen County Branch of the Erie Railroad.

Mr. Mulder's wife, the former Charlotte Benjamin [sic], died September 26, 1918. Since that time he did not take and active part in church work or in the community due to a deafness beyond the aid or assistance of any devices for deaf people. In his younger days Mr. Mulder and others often walked to Paterson to attend church services, taking their lunches with them.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late residence, with the Rev. John T. Holwerda, pastor the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, officiating. Interment followed at Valleau Cemetery, Ridgewood.
