Thomas G. Toler, Sr., of Wenatchee, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Central Washington Hospital, of a sudden heart attack. He was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Leola, AR, to William Thomas and Mae (Lamb) Toler. His family traveled from Arkansas to Washington in 1943. He attended schools and graduated from Okanogan High School in 1953. While in school, he played tennis and basketball. He loved music and played clarinet in the school band and later played guitar with his grandchildren, nieces and nephew.

Tom married his high school sweetheart DeLoris "DeeDee" Robertson on June 6, 1954, in Okanogan. In April 1956, his loving daughter, Terri, was born and, on Sept. 30, 1960, Tom Sr.'s 26th birthday, Tom Jr. was born.

In 1955, he was employed by the Washington State D.O.T., where he worked on the survey crew. In 1958, he was an instrumental part of the team locating the North Cascades Highway. He surveyed both East and West sides of the pass.

In 1965, Tom was transferred to Wenatchee, where he was in charge of layout and inspection of the first rest area in the state. He also was the inspector on a concrete and steel bridge. His 38 years with the D.O.T. include Documentation Engineer, EEO Officer, Asst. St. Aide Engineer and Asst. Construction Engineer until his retirement in 1993.

After Tom's retirement, he worked on the Washington Emergency Management Disaster Team, helping to recover losses from flooding and the 2001 earthquake.

He was an avid golfer and a lifelong member of the Rock Island Golf Course. He was a beautiful woodcarver and furniture maker when he didn't have his nose in a book. Tom was a proud owner of a 1956 Classic T-Bird.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, DeLoris Toler of the home; his daughter Terri and husband Jon Fredrich of East Wenatchee; his son Tom Jr. and wife Ruth Toler of Wenatchee; his brother Roger and wife Helen Toler of Orondo; sister Bobbie and husband Ken Whorton of Roseville, CA; two loving grandchildren, Jessica Smith of East Wenatchee and Travis Toler of Wenatchee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
