Jack Abugov passed away in the loving care of beloved wife Doreen Abugov after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer just a few months short of their Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary. He is survived by his wife Doreen, his children, Murray Abugov, Bruce (Alma) Abugov, and Marilyn (Rich) Thompson; three grandchildren, Ryan and Erika Thompson and Ella Abugov, all of Calgary; and his brother Alex in Cornwall, ON. Jack was predeceased by his sister Shirley Shnier in 2004.
Jack was born in Cornwall, ON. He married Doreen Cohen in 1948 and graduated from McGill University with an engineering degree in 1949. After working with Northern Electric as a draftsman and serving during the Second World War with the RCAF, Jack moved, with Doreen, to Calgary, where Jack left a lasting legacy as a leading engineer, a tremendously committed family man, and a generous supporter of his community. Jack built the largest suspension bridge of its kind, a natural gas pipeline over the Bow River in Cochrane, AB in 1959. His firm, Abugov and Sunderland, designed the tallest building west of Toronto at the time, Edmonton's CN Tower in 1968. The firm, under Jack's leadership, went on to construct the world famous West Edmonton Mall which was completed in the 1980s. Jack will be remembered as a patient man whose greatest accomplishments were as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He welcomed his son Bruce into his Engineering and Architectural firm, inspired and mentored his son-in-law Rich Thompson in his entrepreneurial career and spent countless hours instilling his grandson Ryan with a passion for science, engineering and flying.
He celebrated the artistic accomplishments of his granddaughter Erika and smiled warmly as a witness recently to granddaughter Ella's first steps. Jack earned his pilot's license in 1975 and was an avid pilot well into his seventies. The Calgary Jewish community has benefited greatly from Jack's kind heart and from his willingness to donate his time, skills and resources. Among other projects, the Calgary Hebrew School (Calgary Jewish Academy), The Beth Tzedec Synagogue, the Beth Israel Synagogue, Shaarey Tzedec Synagogue and the Calgary Jewish Centre have all benefited from Jack's tremendous contributions and support. Along with his lifelong friend, Ted Riback, he left a lasting legacy for Jewish Youth with his long-time passion and involvement with Camp BB Riback. A loving, gentle man, Jack will be remembered by family and friends for his friendship, his kindness and for the tremendous example he set in all areas of life. The love he shared with Doreen will always be an inspiration for all of us.
Funeral Services were held at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue (1325 Glenmore Trail S.W.) on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. A Graveside Service followed at the Erlton Cemetery (30 Avenue and Erlton Street S.W.).
