He is reported by Nesmith researchers, who wrote articles in the Heritage of Morgan County book, to have been a chaplain for the Confederate troops in the Civil War. It is also said by Nesmith family members that he died in the war in Tennessee and was buried there. They state that his wife made the trip by wagon to Tennessee after the war and retrieved his body to be brought back to the family cemetery for reburial. Sadly, no trace of his tombstone can be found today.

This is from their Family Bible. His wife found it a while after he left for the War.
February the 10th 1863 - We part --(I to try my fortune in the War) ---perhaps never to meet again in this world---If so, I hope and pray to God that we may meet in Heaven where parting will be no more. The time has been sweet we have spent together. Signed R B Nesmith
So sad. He died less than 3 months.
