Charles Weldon Nesselrotte:

CONVERSE- Nesselrotte was a Iwo Jima veteran during World War II, Charles Weldon Nesselrotte helped in the air refueling of long-range fighters and bombers in the Pacific for the Army Air Force.

"He left school to go into the service for his country," said his wife, Evelyn Nesselrotte of Converse. "He didn't like to talk about his service much. But he did fight in some of the big battles."

Nesselrotte participated in the battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945 in which 6,800 Americans and 21,800 Japanese soldiers were killed.

Nesselrotte, 70, died Friday in the Temple Veteran's Administration Hospital of complications from lung cancer.

Nesselrotte was born in Gay, W.Va., in 1920.

He entered the military in 1940 and was sent to the Pacific as a boom operator aboard a refueling plane.

After the war ended, Nesselrotte was stationed at numerous Air Force bases around the country. He left the military in 1958 with the rank of master sergeant.

Nesselrotte then moved to Austin and went to work as an inspector at Tracor Inc., a semiconductor producer. He later worked as a salesman and buyer at Cullen & Borns, a sporting goods store. He retired in the early 1960s.

He married Evelyn Nesselrotte in 1974.

"He was a wonderful Christian husband and father," said his wife. "He had a great love for his family."

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sheilia Elmore of Dayton, Ohio; two stepsons, Larry Furguson of La Palma, Calif., and George Keil Jr. of Irving; four sisters, Edna Knop of Gay, Dorothy O'Brien of Lincolnton, N.C., Isabel Craig of Ripley, W.Va., and Dora Ruth Lawhon of Hewett; a brother, Willard Nesselrotte of Louisa, Ky; and eight grandchildren.
