Thomas Hosmer, the grandfather of those last mentioned, was a captain in the Revolutionary army. In a N. Y. regiment. At one time, with a squad of twelve men he surprised the British soldiers in a fort on Lake Erie and compelled them to surrender, although the British outnumbered the Americans by one man. Capt. Hosmer died in the old Cowles house in Norfolk, at the age of 96 years.
