Shortly after graduation from Houston High School, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 1st Division (Big Red One) during World War II. He was on the front line in five major campaigns including D-Day at Normandy. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, five Bronze Stars and the Bronze Star Medal.
He married Dorothy Allen Aug. 25, 1946, at the Oak Grove Methodist Church at Simmons.
They moved to Springfield in 1952, where he joined the Springfield newspapers. He went to work for KY3 in 1954, retiring in 1985 as advertising sales director.
Between 1954 and 1960, he earned a degree from Drury College.
Starting in the early '50s, he became involved in civic activities including the McLaughlin Youth Center, Westport Youth Center and was a member of the Lions, Optimists, Downtown Kiwanis and a board member of the Kidney Foundation.
He was a member of the Solomon Lodge #271 AF and AM, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine, Legion of Honor Society of the First Division and became a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Professionally, he was involved in the Television Bureau of Advertising, Springfield Ad Club and Springfield Sales Gold Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Nolan and Leonard.
Surviving are his wife of the home at Columbia; son, Stephen G. Akins of Columbia; brother, Duard Akins; and two grandsons.
Eucharist services are 11 o'clock Friday at Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield with the Rev. Kenneth Chumbley officiating. Burial is in the Missouri Veterasn Cemetery under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel.
