Gene Abernatha
Gene E. Abernatha, 88, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. Mrs. Abernatha was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Oregon, Mo., to Edward and Mary (Kurtz) Furhman. The family came to Buffalo when she was 4 years old. She grew up and graduated from high school in Buffalo. She married Calvin Abernatha there Dec. 31, 1931. She was county secretary for the Department of Agriculture for 22 years until her retirement. Mr. Abernatha died in 1957, and she moved to Sheridan in 1961. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed spending time in the Big Horn Mountains, playing bingo and attending Sunday morning breakfast at the Moose Lodge. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard, and by four brothers and sisters. Survivors include one son, James of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
