WHITELAW -- Elizabeth C. "Betty" (Smith) Goodwin, 82, formerly of Whitelaw (Canastota), passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Crouse Community Center, Morrisville, surrounded by her family, following a lengthy illness.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1930 in Peterboro, N.Y., the daughter of Harry and Lucetta "Jane" Whaley Campbell.
Betty spent her early years in Peterboro, attending the Morrisville schools. She later graduated from NTTS (Truck Driving School) in Syracuse. Betty had, also, lived in Canastota and Perryville, and lived in Whitelaw for many years.
She had worked as a truck driver with her husband, Elmer, for many years, and had previously been a waitress at the former White Elephant Restaurant and Graziano's Casa Mia in Canastota, and at Dell's Pharmacy in Oneida.
Betty was a member of the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Home Circle, the Bible Study Group of the Peterboro United Methodist Church, and both Church Choirs.
She enjoyed gardening, especially rock gardens, plants, cacti, and her many pets.
Betty married Elmer N. Smith on June 29, 1947, in Peterboro. Elmer died on March 18, 1992.
Surviving are: a son, Christopher K. Smith of Canastota; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lela and Mark Hall of Richmond, Va., Bette Niles of Canastota, Barbara and Ronald Ortman Sr., and Penny and Rick Stevens, all of Whitelaw; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry W. and Sharon Campbell of Whitelaw; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Brown, and Linda and Donald Holman, all of Whitelaw; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Campbell of Peterboro; 11 grandchildren, Gary Debrucque, Kyle Debrucque, Greg Niles, Michael Niles, Adam Ortman, Samantha Wolf, Ronald Ortman Jr., Stacy Besaw, Zachary Stevens, Meghan Stevens, and Kayla Smith; 22 great-grandchildren, Sophie Debrucque, Jacob Debrucque, Raymond Debrucque, Mitchell Kreighbaum, Lindsay Kreighbaum, Kirstin Niles, Justin Niles, Xavyer Niles, Lilly Niles, Ryan Besaw, Olivia Besaw, Gabriel Ortman, Logan Ortman, Brianna Ortman, Hunter Ortman, Braydon Wolf, Reilly Wolf, Mackenzi Stevens, Kennedy Stevens, Omari Knight, Nadiyah Knight, and Samiya Jordan; several nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as the dedicated staff and friends at the Crouse Community Center. Betty was predeceased by two brothers, David Campbell, and Robert Campbell; a grandson, Erick D. Stevens; and a great-granddaughter, Alannah Knight.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Whitelaw Presbyterian Church, 8665 N. Main St., Canastota, with Pastor Donna Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Peterboro Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. In her memory, contributions may be made to the Crouse Community Center, Activities Fund, 101 South St., Morrisville, NY 13408, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
