Biography of James Quayle: 6th and 8th Mayor of Logan
James Quayle was born 16 July 1831 on the Isle of Man. His parents were Robert Quayle and Cathrine Shimmin. He met and married Elizabeth Gillions in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1855.They are the parents of seven children. He died 1 July 1913 in Logan, Utah and was buried in the Logan Cemetery.
Mr. Quayle was a pioneer, crossing the plains in 1853 in the Cyrus H. Wheelock company. He moved to Logan, Utah in 1860 and there engaged in farming and stock raising, which business he followed continuously and successfully to the time of his death, passing away in 1913 at the advanced age of eighty-two years. He was an active, useful and honorable life, gaining for him the warm regard of all with whom he was associated. He was an earnest and helpful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in 1871 and 1872 served on a mission in the eastern states. His political endorsement was given to the Republican Party and he was mayor of Logan for several terms, putting forth most earnest and effective effort for the upbuilding of the city, the advancement of its welfare and the upholding of its high civic standards. He married Elizabeth Gillions, a native of England, who came to America in 1854 and at once crossed the continent to Utah.
James Quayle was listed as a carpenter and builder in the Utah Directory for 1890 at the address Johnson, between fourth and fifth in Logan, Utah.
Mr. Quayle assisted with the building of the Logan Temple. Many of the workmen labored weeks and even months on donation. James Quayle was the master carpenter. T.O. Angell, Jun., was the architect, and C.O. Card, the superintendent of construction, who had charge and oversight from the beginning.
James Quayle was a City Councilor from 1880 to 1882 when he resigned. He was elected again in 1888 as an Alderman and in 1889 he was appointed to be the mayor of Logan to finish the term of Aaron F. Farr Jr. He was elected to be the mayor of Logan in 1892 and finished his term in 1894.
As mayor of Logan Mr. Quayle showed vision and insight concerning the electric light plant. During the year the plant could not satisfy the needs of a growing town. B.F. Riter, chairman of the electric light committee of the Council, made a strong plea in September 1889 for disposing of the plant. Mayor James Quayle in a report to the Council in November urged the city to take stock in a new and modern plant if one were organized.
