Ira Jay Dutton married Charlotte Cecile Harrington on 23 January 1901, in Ashland, Ashland County, Wisconsin. The town of Ashland extends into Bayfield County. Ira was the son of Franklin and Lucy Dutton.

Ira Dutton attended Oberlin College, and Columbia University. He began the practice of law in April of 1901. In February of 1907, he was injured in a train wreck in Brewster, New York and was incapacitated for two and one half years. Ira owned 1200 acres in Vermont, in which he reclaimed the soil by scientific farming methods. He was a director in Westbury Park, Long Island and Wemlinger Steel Piling Company.
