John was the son of William & Margaret Holoford Sellman. He was taken by the Benoit Brassier family to serve as a 'custom servant', a method by which he paid for his passage to America. He worked for 15 years to satisfy the debt.

In 1679, he married Brassier's daughter,Elizabeth. They were the parents of 9 children-John, Elizabeth (Grey), Margaret (Williams), Mary (died young), William, Anne (died young), Robert, Lawrence, and Ruth (Clark).
