John Robert Hogue was born in 1862. His parents were Vard (Vardeman) Hogue and Catherine Storie Hogue. His grandparents were Milburn and Rachel Hogue. His great-grandparents were Anderson and Elizabeth Hogue.

John was born in Clinton Co, Kentucky. He moved to Overton Co. Tenn. in 1881 where he married Martha Celina Sidwell.

According to Albert Ross Hogue's 1914 History of Fentress Co. Tennessee, John was involved in farming, logging, merchandising and law. He served as a county judge in Overton Co. and was elected to the House of Representatives 54th General Assembly in 1904. He and his daughter, Dona, attended the inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt that year.


He was a member of the Odd Fellows and served for a time as postmaster at Allons, TN. It is reported by Albert Hogue that after John resigned as postmaster he received a draft from the United States for one cent as the balance due in his postal account.

John and Martha had 10 children. Gibson (1882), Benton (1884), Dona (1885), Bedford (1888), Ina (1892), twins Clora & Flora (1894), Wade (1895), William (1897) and Veo (1900).

John died in Jan. 1941 and Martha died in June of that year.
