James Thomas Cochran enlisted in the Confederate Army in Albany, Georgia on 10 August, 1861. His military record is found under the name "Cochran, J. T." When he enlisted, he joined Captain Lawton's Company, "Dougherty Hussars" Cavalry Battalion, Georgia Legion. He was a Sergeant at the time he enlisted. This company subsequently became Company "D," Cavalry Battalion, Cobb's Legion, Georgia Volunteers.

By the end of 1861, he is shown as a "Private," and by November 1862 he is listed as a 1st Corporal. In early 1863, he is listed as 5th Sergeant and by the end of 1863 he is 4th Sergeant. By April 1864, he is listed as 3rd Sergeant and remained a sergeant until the end of the war.

A Roll of Prisoners of War, lists him as being captured on 8 May, 1865 in Athens, Georgia by forces under the command of Brevet Brigadier General, W. J. Palmer (William Jackson Palmer). He was paroled and released on or about 8 May, 1865 in Athens, Georgia by Brevet Brigadier General, W. J. Palmer.
