Lt. Daniel B. Hyde of Modesto, California graduated from Thomas Downey High School in 2003 and lettered in three varsity sports in high school, football, basketball and golf, for three years and was elected student body president twice. He was a member of at least two academic honor societies, maintaining a 4.20 GPA and volunteered at Delta Blood Bank and worked at a golf course. In 2002, Daniel was featured in The Bee's Teen Hall of Fame. He was believed to be Downey's first two-term student body president. He said his parents were his biggest influence; that his biggest dislike was people who were undisciplined; and that his advice to kids was "not to accept mediocrity in any aspect of your life." Daniel had been accepted to all three military academies and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2007. It was his first combat deployment since he graduated from West Point where he ranked 23rd in his class. Daniel died at age 24 in Iraq in service with the U.S. Army. He leaves his parents, Brian and Glenda, sister Andrea, and grandparents Richard and Gloria Hyde and George Meyer and Patricia Meyer.
