Frederick Harland Winters, 45, of Edwardsville, Ill., born Dec. 4, 1963, in Kansas City, Mo., died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Ill.

Pastor Winters was preceded in death by his father, Jack Bailey Winters (22 Jul 1939 in Missouri-11 Mar 2003 Butler, Bates County,Missouri)

Surviving are his wife, Cindy, nee Jackson, Winters of Edwardsville, Ill.; daughters, Alysia Grace Winters and Cassidy Hope Winters, both of Edwardsville, Ill.; mother, Jacqueline, nee Hannon, Gepford of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers, Karl (Ramona) Winters of Hutto, Texas, Joe (Mary) Winters of Columbia, Mo., Zach (Karen) Winters of Joplin, Mo., Andrew Winters of Warrensburg, Mo., and John Winters of Joplin, Mo.; a sister, Anna (Jim) Sublette of Clinton, Mo.; and grandfather, Dr. Harland Hannon of Worcester, Mass.

Memorials may be made to the Winters Family Memorial Fund or First Baptist Maryville Building Fund.

Visitation: Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Maryville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Maryville, Ill., with the Rev. Robert Dickerson and the Rev. Timothy Cowin officiating.

Rev. Frederick H. Winters (45) was preaching the Sermon of Happiness in The Workplace "Come On, Get Happy" at his church of First Baptist Church in Maryville, IL when around 8:15 a 27 year old man from Troy, IL walked down the aisle and opened fire with a .45-caliber handgun shooting four times at close range, hitting Winters once in the chest, killing the pastor almost instantly.

He was subdued by fellow parishioners whereas 2 male parishioners were wounded in the process. Rev. Winters walked down the aisle before collapsing, Rev. Winters was taken to nearby Anderson Hospital where he passed away of gunshot wound to the chest.

He leaves behind his Wife Cindy Lee (Jackson) of 21 years that he married on September 12, 1987.

He also leaves behind two daughters Alysia Grace and Cassidy Hope.

He will be missed by many and may everyone's prayers go out to him and his family and to the congregation and to the 27 year old man from Troy, IL and his relatives and to the 2 members of First Baptist Church that were injured in trying to hold the 27 year old man down that killed their pastor.
