New Richmond - Herbert M. Fruits, 63, New Richmond, died of an apparent heart attack Tuesday morning in the Romney Post Office. He was a rural mail carrier for the Linden, Romney and New Richmond post offices. Mr. Fruits had served with the US Army during WWII with a tank destroyer battalion in the European Theatre. He was a prisoner of War in Nurenburg, Germany for four months. He was a member of the New Richmond Christian Church, NR American Legion, NR Masonic Lodge 604 and Rural Mail Carriers Association. He was graduated from New Richmond HS in 1930. Born Oct 6, 1911, at Crawfordsville, he was a son of Charles M. and Mary Smith Fruits. He was married to Evangeline Louke of Darlington in 1935. She died in 1937. Surviving is a brother, Ralph of Washington DC; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Patrick and Mrs. Marietta Perry of New Richmond; Mrs. Patricia Ferguson of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Grace Haire of Baltimore, MD; two aunts, Mrs. Kate Tucker of Alamo and Mrs. Daisy Fruits of New Richmond; 16 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles in 1973; a sister, Thelma; a niece and nephew. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Servies-Thomas Funeral Home, Waynetown with Rev. Robert Hayden officiating. Burial in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday. Masonic rites will be at 8 p.m. Thursday by the NR Lodge. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the NR American Legion Post.
