GERALDINE HAMMONDS Our mother, mama and memaw went home to Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 11, 2006. Geraldine made her home in Austell for well over a half century and her entire life centered on family, church, friends and country. She was a devoted church member of fifty-eight years at the First Baptist Church of Austell, where she served in many roles, including leading the food ministry, working as the Sunday School department secretary, leading the WMU and Girls Auxiliary organization and cooking cakes for the many she loved. Her career included serving as director of food services for both South Cobb High School and Skyview Middle School. She volunteered at Cobb Hospital, served as president of the PTA for three schools and as a poll volunteer for the city of Austell. Her most important career was that of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother! Geraldine's husband, Emory, died in 1955 at the age of forty-two and she endured many difficult times raising a family on her own. Geraldine never complained and was always grateful, while making the best of whatever she encountered and being there for others. Everyone always loved Geraldine's infectious laugh and happy smile that were the trademarks of her personality. Geraldine leaves us with a timeless message to always be kind, worship the Lord and work hard to make this world a better place for all. Geraldine was truly an amazing lady and an inspiration to everyone! Her family is so thankful for having her in our lives. We love her very much and she will be greatly missed by all. Geraldine is survived by four children: Son, Jerry Hammonds and daughter-in-law Barbara of Lake Mary, Florida; Son, Dr. Richard Hammonds and daughter-in-law Chris of Kennesaw, Georgia; Daughter, Martha Bates of Kennesaw, Georgia; Daughter, Risa Fielder and son-in-law, Lester of Marietta, Georgia. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. Geraldine is preceded in death by her brothers, Roy, Joseph, John and Jack Richardson and son-in-law William Bates. Funeral arrangements will be entrusted to the Roy Davis Funeral Home, Austell Georgia. A gathering remembrance and visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, at the Roy Davis Funeral Home. The celebration memorial service honoring Geraldine will be held on Wednesday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Austell with the Reverend Johnny Foster presiding. Geraldine will be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery with her husband, Emory Howard Hammonds.
