The killing of Uncle Billy Gallaway - letter excerpt written by Mary Selman Gallaway Dodson (1878-1968) to Sue Cearley Norman (1932-1995)

" ... After the war, Uncle Billy loaned a neighbor a plow (it was somewhere in the Crawford-McGregor-Valley Mills area where they lived) and the man did not return it. When Uncle Billy needed it he asked the man for it, and somehow in it all the man shot and killed Uncle Billy. Uncle Billy was a fine, much-liked citizen, as Rip[Gallaway] told you, and they got up a posse and hounded the man and killed him 'like they would a rattlesnake,' An old man told me here, about 10 or 15 years ago as we sat on his porch with his wife one moonlit night, he was one of the posse; that about every man in the community joined, and they went after him like he was a mad dog. Uncle Billy was much loved."
