James Howard Caudill, 67, of Hanover, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at his home.

He was born June 7, 1941, in Allen, Ky., the son of Loyd and Stella Branham Caudill. He began his teaching career in Bellevue, Ohio in 1964 and taught in Trimble County, Ky. and at Southwestern Consolidated Schools. From 1968 until his retirement in 2001, he was a teacher in the Madison Consolidated School Corporation. He taught high school government, U.S. history and psychology, and was the school's program leader for social studies. He had a bachelor's degree from Pikeville College and a master's degree from Indiana State University. He was a member of the Madison Teachers Association, the Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was an avid sports fan and was known as the "Voice of the Cubs" for being an announcer at the Madison Cubs football and basketball games for many years. He was a member of the Hanover United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and golf.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Martin Caudill, whom he married June 12, 1965; one daughter, Jamelin Swinger of Plainfield; three sisters, Bonnie Hinton of Orange Park, Fla., Pauline Crisp of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Betty Jean Rickman of Lackey, Ky.; one granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Leah Justine Dingus; and two brothers, Charles Clifford Caudill and Harry Winford Caudill.

The service of remembrance was at the Hanover United Methodist Church. The family had a balloon ceremony to honor him at the Point.
