Laila Rae Serpe, 12, died March 5, 2009, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Laila was skiing with her family and left this world doing something that brought her great joy. Laila was a brilliant student at Cape Henry Collegiate School (Virginia Beach) where she was much loved by her friends and faculty. She was a talented pianist, vocalist, figure skater, surfer, swimmer, athlete, artist, and actress. She deeply loved her two black labs and all of God's animals. She and her family were members of Holy Family Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, Va. Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Richard and Linda Serpe of Virginia Beach; her brothers, Sal, Max, and Rex Serpe; her grandparents, Dr. Salvatore and Dorothy Serpe of Massapequa, N.Y., Helen Robichaud of China Grove, N.C.; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is also survived by countless friends. Laila's gift of her organs is saving the lives of some lucky children. A Mass of the Resurrection was held Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, with Father Thomas J. Quinlan officiating. Burial at Princess Anne Memorial Park followed the Mass. A Christian wake service was held Sunday at 3 p.m., March 8, at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial donations be made to support organ donation at LifeNet Health Foundation, 1864 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach, Va. 23453, to Hope for Life Rescue, 610 Jack Rabbit Road, #1, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451, or to a charity of choice.
