In 1861, at the breaking out of the Civil War, he enlisted for three years in the 25th Ill. Vol. Inf., Co. A, as private. He was in a number of the most severe battles fought during the war: Pea Ridge, Stone River, Chickasaw Mountain, siege of Atlanta and other engagements. He received a wound in the left arm. From private he rose to first sergeant, then to second lieutenant, and from thence to first lieutenant. In 1864 he was mustered out, at which time he returned to Vermilion Co., Illinois.
