FUNERAL RITES FOR J.W. SPARKS HELD SATURDAY

AGED AUGUSTA VETERINARIAN LAID TO REST IN WOODLAWN CEMETERY

Funeral services for J.W. Sparks, aged Augusta veterinarian, were held Saturday morning, May 30 at 10:30 o'clock in the Markee Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. J. Turner Hood, pastor of the Presbyterian church.

Two hymns, "In the Garden" and "The Lord is My Shepherd" were sung by Mrs. C.G. Winters and Mrs. C.C. Bruner, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Chas. Hanning.

Casket bearers were Glen Jones, Frank Eaton, Grey Hamilton, Chas. Steele, Dix Hamilton and Roger Burton. Interment was in Woodlawn cemetery.

Relatives attending from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Thompson of Rockport; Mrs. Belle Gallaher and son, Forrest, Quincy; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Myers, Peoria; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carey, Hannibal, Mo.; Mrs. Dollie Graham, Big Springs, Texas; Robert Sparks, Doris Wilma Sparks and Betty Jean Sparks of Springfield. The following out of town friends also attended: Lester L Heater, Grace B. Hunt, F.D. Hunt, Preston Thomas, John Sarff, L.L. Edlen, M.F. Knapp, Paul Hulson, Henry A. Charles, Zeb Kost, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sweetman, Fred Lashbrook, H.D. Herleman, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Parr, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Talbott, Howard Barker.

James William Sparks was born Feb. 27, 1857 at Liberty, Illinois and passed away May 27, 1942 at Augusta, Illinois, aged 85 years, 3 months. He was the eldest son of William Leander and Elizabeth Elwood Sparks.

Until 25 years ago he lived in Adams County where he practiced his profession as veterinarian until ill health prevented continuance of his work. He then moved to Augusta to be near his children.

He married Mary Ann Daugherty of Liberty, Ill. On June 4, 1883. To this marriage three daughters were born: Dollie Graham of Big Springs, Texas; Stella Thompson and Pearl Matthews of Augusta; and three sons, Robert of Springfield, Fred at home and Floyd, who preceded his father in death. He is survived by his widow, one sister, Belle Gallaher, of Quincy, one brother, Frank, of Kingston, Ill., 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was kindhearted and always cheerful, a man who made friends easily, a good husband, father and grandfather. AS such we shall remember him as he passes on.
