Preacher, Distiller. Call was a Civil War veteran who served under Nathan Bedford Forrest. After the war he became a Lay Preacher in the Evangelical Union Lutheran Church of Lois, Tennessee. Call had a whiskey still on his property and in 1864 took in an orphaned 16 year old Jack Daniel to help with his distilling. They entered into a partnership and Call began to teach Daniel all he knew about distilling whiskey. The partnership was officially registered with the U.S. Government on November 27, 1875. When the Lutheran Church sided with the Temperance Movement on the prohibition issue, Call decided to break from Jack Daniel and distilling. For the next 22 years Call focused on preaching, improving his ever expanding land holdings and raising 18 children – 4 who died in infancy.Daniel Call had married Mary Jane Nelson on Aug 4, 1856, in Lincoln Co., Tennessee.
