Before becoming a homemaker, Hazel worked in Washington, DC during World War II for the federal government. She also worked at The Greenbrier when it was used as a military hospital during the war.

Hazel and Sherman married June 4, 1949 in Clifton Forge, Virginia.

She was a lifelong Methodist, loved to read, travel and to sew. What she loved most was spending time with her grandchildren.
