Rites for Simms Ex-Farmer
Christian W. Crabtree, 95-year-old retired farmer of Simms, died Wednesday in a Choteau hospital. He came to Montana first in 1899 and had farmed south of Great Falls 10 years, 1901 to 1911, before moving to the Sun River Valley. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Simms Community Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Great Falls, with military honors accorded by the Veterans Council.
Crabtree was born March 20, 1875, in North Litchfield Township, Illinois. As a young man he went to South Dakota and in 1897 enlisted in the Illinois infantry, serving until the Spanish-American peace treaty was signed.
In 1899 he came to Dillon. After two years he returned to Illinois to marry Alice Baker, and a month later in March 1901, they arrived in Great Falls. Crabtree farmed for 50 years in the Sun River Valley. His wife died in 1965.
Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Isabelle Kessinger and Mrs. Alice Buck of Simms, Mrs. Hazel Stimac of Eagle Mountain, Calif., and Mrs. Fannie Hatcher of Fairfield; a son, John, of Fairfield; a brother, Dave, of Kirkland, Wash.; 11 grandchildrenm 36 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Two children preceded him in death.
