Burl established the Pure Oil Station in Morehead in 1954 and operated it until his retirement in 1967. He was a member of the Church of God.

He is survived by: his wife, Roxie Hall Crosthwaite; three daughters, Wilma, Loretta and Jeraldine; a brother, Clemens Crosthwaite; a sister, Grace Crosthwaite; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday. Burial was in Bath County Memorial Gardens.
